Presbyopia
is the result of a natural process that manifests itself generally
in your 40s and 50s, due to the gradual hardening of the crystalline
lens. Normally, your crystalline lens changes form to bring an
image into focus, a process called accommodation. With age comes
a diminished power of accommodation in the crystalline lens, preventing
clear vision of close objects. Even if your myopia or hyperopia
is corrected through refractive surgery, you may still suffer
from presbyopia. To date, presbyopia is only corrected by wearing
reading glasses or by monovision, which is a refractive surgery
giving distant focus to one eye and close focus to the other.
